CAT 2024 - Table of Contents

How to Prepare for CAT 2024

CAT is one of most difficult competitive exams in India. More than 300, 000 candidates compete year for a little over 5000 seats. Thus, you should be ready to face the challenges. In the long run, you read a lot of high quality material, such as daily editorials of a good newspaper, magazine, etc. You should also read some of the best seller books, novel, etc., making sure you understand all the difficult words and difficult sentences you come across. Thus, you will be able to improve your reading skills, vocabulary and grammar. Additionally, you will also be well – prepared for your Group Discussion and Personal Interview, GDPI as will be well - versed with national and international current affairs. For Quants and DI, you should practice basic mathematics from the 9th and 10th grades’ NCERT or ICSE text books. You should have very strong fundamentals before you join any CAT Prep course.

Keep in mind that if you join a course with the class size of 30 - 40 students, you may save some money, but you will hardly learn anything and your doubts won’t be solved. And if you are a very bright student, you will be wasting a lot of time doing the fundamentals you already know. An on - screen calculator is allowed in CAT. No external calculator is permitted.

Scoring: CAT has a negative marking system. For each correct answer, 3 marks is allotted and 1 mark is deducted for each wrong answer. Hence, you should not mark random answers. Your target should be to attempt 50 - 60 percent questions accurately. You do not need to answer all the questions to get a good percentile. However, you need to target 45 - 50 questions if you aim to achieve 99 percentiles.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The top 6 IIMs organize CAT exam on rotation basis. IIM Calcutta will conduct CAT 2024 while it was managed by IIM Lucknow after a gap of 5 years. CAT is a computer based exam and is conducted online for admissions to premier business schools in India, including 21 IIMs across India, the oldest of which are IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta, which were set up in 1961. 12 years later, IIM Bangalore was established. IIM Ahmedabad is on the top rank among all. The CAT 2024 will be held at 375 test centres in 167 cities across India. Candidates will be able to choose 6 options for their test centre. More than 300, 000 candidates apply for CAT every year. The highest number of candidates registered for CAT in 2023. The number of CAT applicants was close to 330, 000 in 2023. The number is likely to be close to 4 lakh in CAT 2024 and CAT 2025.

The total marks in CAT examination are 300. For each correct answer, 3 marks is allotted and for each wrong answer, one mark is deducted. There is no negative marking for unanswered questions and non-MCQs. An on-screen basic calculator is available for students.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are the premier institutes for management studies. The Combined Admission Test (CAT) is conducted every year for admissions to different management courses, such as MBA/ PGDM, PGP, Executive MBA, Ph. D., etc. provided by top B Schools including 21 IIMs, MDI Gurgaon, JBIMS Mumbai, SPJIMR Mumbai, FMS Delhi, all IITs and IMIs. There are around 5, 500 seats in 21 IIMs across India. There are two major steps to qualify for major top Business Schools. First, the written test CAT and the second, Written Ability Test/ Group Discussion and Personal Interview.

The candidates must have secured minimum 50% marks in a Bachelor’s Degree. The candidates belonging to SC, ST or PwD categories require minimum 40% marks in their Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised university/ institute. Candidates in the final year of Graduation can apply for and appear in CAT. Candidates having a recognised professional degree equivalent to graduation and having secured minimum 50% marks in general category and minimum 40% marks in reserved categories can apply for CAT. Thus, candidates having pursued professional courses, such as CS, CA, ICWAI, etc. can also apply for CAT. Further, there is no limit on the number of attempts a candidate can make. The exam fee of CAT is Rs. 2300 for General Category and Rs. 1150 for Reserved Category.

CAT 2024 Detailed Syllabus

There will be three sections in CAT 2024:

  1. Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)
  2. Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) and
  3. Quantitative Ability (QA)

CAT 2024 - VARC Syllabus

In CAT 2024, the first section will be Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension. This section will have 24 questions to be answered in 40 minutes. This section will contain the questions based on:

The questions based on grammar may be from Articles, Use of Tenses, Sentence Structure, Idioms and Phrases, Pronouns, Modifiers, Prepositions, Noun Number, etc.

CAT 2024 - DILR Syllabus

There are total 20 questions in DILR section, which contains 10 questions of Data Interpretation and questions of Logical Reasoning. The time allotted for this section is 40 minutes. This section will have the questions based on:

1. Is CAT very difficult to crack?

Ans.: Yes, there is no doubt about CAT being very difficult to crack. It is among the toughest Indian competitive exams. Nevertheless, it can be cracked through proper planning and execution. Hence, clearing fundamental concepts is very important.

2. How much time is required to prepare for CAT?

Ans.: Four to six months…
You will need minimum three months to clear the fundamental concepts and a month to do some full mock tests.

3. How many hours weekly do I need to study?

Ans.: 30 - 40 hours a week is good. However, you make sure that you study in the slots of 2 hours each to maintain your concentration level. Thus, after 2 hours of intense study, you may take a short break and continue again refreshed, replenished.

4. Which CAT slot has the most difficult questions?

Ans.: CAT is conducted in three slots every year, i.e. morning, afternoon and evening. The difficulty level is almost the same in all the three slots. However, you should always try for the morning slot as your body and mind works best after a good sleep and rest.

5. Can I get a refund after I have joined the course?

Ans.: Sorry, the fee paid is non - refundable and non - transferable.

6. Do you offer any ‘demo class’/ ‘trial lecture’?
